Import from Ning to Drupal

Ah, the Ning mess continues.  Nothing is free. Wen we will learn to work together so as to save ourselves the trouble?  A little more work up front and so much less hassle later, I say.

So, would you like to migrate from Ning to Drupal?  Great!

Daily Reflection Prompting for Long Term Perspectives

I was sitting with James Burke last night after a long day at the HackdeOverheid event.  We were chatting about how the conference was or wasn't supportive or related to what we considered our 'core work.'  I was making a few points about resources I am seeking related to the Cooperative Ecology and Commons Based Enterprise work that I'm doing.

Cooperative Publishing House Project

Have you ever wondered what it takes to publish a journal?

I'd like to know myself, and I am sure there's a lot of different pieces I don't know about yet, but, let's give it a try!

There's a new page on the P2P Foundation's wiki.  You can find that here: http://p2pfoundation.net/Publishing_House

Visualizing Node Relationships in Drupal

As information on the web becomes more and more flexible it seems logical that the spaces between information will become more and more the center of attention.

Inside Drupal it's possible to create any number of relationships between nodes.  Nodes might be locations, articles, or any other number of things, and starting with Drupal 7 all of this data will be packaged with RDFa.

Regardless, there are lots of pages on each Drupal site, and if you are using node relationships, then you probably already know that there's a rich amoutn of data in those relationships.

New Drupal Distributions Come to Light

Two Drupal distributions were hyped by Aqcuia today.

OpenPublish is built for use by groups that wish to publish newspapers or journals.

Drupal now offered as a one click install with Dreamhost

Dreamhost is a wild and woolly webhost that doesn't follow with the big guys. They lead the field in creating a really usable custom administration panel, and they realy have worked hard to make it intuitive and fast.

That being said, the availability of Drupal, Version 5, is a really important step. I've been running Drupal on their servers for years, and I still have a number of clients who use Dreamhost for their Drupal hosting because of the low price of the overall package.

What is Drupal?

The best place to start for a description of Drupal is here on the Drupal.org website. You can also find a number of case studies there to review and to find our more about how others are using the software.

For beginners, Drupal is a complex Swiss-Army knife that is best used when you have run out of options. Unless you have some help, you will need to use a service like Bryght or Dreamhost, to have them install the software for you.
